Hey! I am new here - what are the Aubrey Awards ?
The Aubrey Awards Celebration is an annual event to celebrate those creators and performers and staff whom our ACTSDC Judges have selected for their particularly outstanding work. At the end of each season, after all the Judges have completed their reporting, our Judging Chairperson tabulates the results and compiles a list of who the Judges have identified as outstanding in specific traditional categories of theatre production. Those who are identified by the Judges in each category become Aubrey Nominees. They are announced at a Nominees Party, usually held around June or July. The Nominee Party is a casual event. All Nominees receive certificates that acknowledge and honor their outstanding work. When the nominations have been announced you can see a complete list of them all by clicking on the Aubrey Award Listings on the main menu, above.
Some weeks later the nominations are published, the Aubrey Awards Celebration gala is held to present an Aubrey trophy to the persons that received the most accolades from the Judges in their category. This is usually a dress -up event, at a nice venue, with cocktails and dinner, and the excitement is - well, a lot of fun! Everyone there knows how much hard work went into making a quality theatre experience for every person in every audience. The pride of receiving an Aubrey trophy, of receiving this honorific from your peers, is genuinely a feel good moment. And the opportunity to stand and clap and cheer for the work and devotion of your Community Theatre friends is a great goodness as well.
Incidentally, the award is called an Aubrey, after the man who founded the Association of Community Theatres San Diego in 1963. In 2015 Aubrey Dunne posthumously received a national honor award from American Association of Community Theatres for his lifetime devotion to developing community theatres around San Diego county. For more information about our ACTSDC, check out the About link in the Main Menu.
2026 will be the 60th Awards Season for ACT San Diego. It is our Diamond Jubilee!
